Stormy Prelude
When the heavens opened up on 28 Nov Presentation Day @ 1City mall with monsoonal wind and lashing rain, the thoughts on everyone’s mind was “Here come the rain, again!” reminiscing of last year’s wettest episode; The thunderstorm was so strong that the outdoor presentation had to be cancelled under the unrelenting heavy showers and gusty wind;
Taking Nothing for Granted
At the event briefing that night, the dictum of “never taking anything for granted” was again, reaffirmed to the participants and media from 25 nations, after all, this is the Rainforest Challenge (RFC), where full preparation (mind, body & machine) means everything to survive the 10 days of extreme off-roading through the dripping depths of the Malaysian jungle and where the natural elements can cause havoc to the best-laid –plans - welcome to the home of “one of the ten toughest motor races in the world;” In the days that followed, the adventurers learnt their lessons well from Mother Nature;
Sunny Start
D-Day on 29 Nov turned out to be a bright and sunny start to opening ceremony at Youth & Sports Complex of Negeri Sembilan (N9), the state which played host to RFC 2014 for the very first time in the 18-year history of the event; A warm welcome from Negeri Sembilan Tourism Board to the participants from Poland, Austria, Australia, Russia, Denmark, India, Korea, China, Hong Kong (China), Brunei, Brazil, Philippines, Taiwan, Lebanon, Slovakia, Singapore, Hungary, Czech Republic, Mexico, Canada, Thailand, Vietnam, New Zealand & home country: Malaysia
Muddy Madness Prologue
For all participants coming from Europe to Asia, it was show-time at the spectator-friendly Prologue Special Stages (SS) coming in their hundreds to witness full 4x4 action during 29-30 Nov weekend held at Nouvelle Hotel vicinity at Port Dickson (PD);
The Prologue SS were warming up sessions for the driver and co-driver to get into gear and test their capabilities before the jungle stages begin; Even though these man-made with JCB machines were light-weight exercises – they still turned out to be “muddy madness” thrills and spills of the extreme kind for man and machine plus a lot of grappling with the ground anchor to the delights of the spectators;
Ladies of Steel
However, it’s not man and machine alone that shine, but the Ladies of Steel that made the headlines too, in the likes of Datin Maslina Ibrahim (Malaysia), Atiqah Abdullah (Brunei), Patti Nabong (Philippines) and Fabiana Martins (Brasil) – these gusty ladies drove in a four-wheel drive car and 2 UTVs which made heads turned and cameras rolled in all the 9 SS at the Prologue;
Top Guns
The main show is, still, back to man and machine and this edition is considered the “Battle of the Top Guns,” in which three “juggernauts” made their presence along with the 35 race teams registered at the start of the event comprising of RFC 2012 Champion team 104, Borneo Safari Champion team 119 and RFC 2011 Champion team 129; The other teams are, however, no pushovers especially Team 113, 137, 112, 108, 132, 146 and 115
All these top ten teams coming from Russia, Austria, Australia and Malaysia did not disappoint as they fought for supremacy in 4x4 from the Prologue SS right to the end at campsite III (Gateway to the Twilight Zone);
Technical & Tough SS
The Special Stages (SS) in the jungle are laid out over natural terrain using steep slopes, rivers and the cloying mud to test driver’s skills and vehicle’s capabilities. But a lot of places were too tough to drive and that’s where “have winch will travel” really comes into play;
These were some of the 23 SS, most of which were technical and tough, testing the teams in their machine power, manpower, strategic thinking, driving and recovery skills; At most of the jungle SS, the obstacles were not only energy sapping but also strained their engines to the limits and beyond across steep ascends, descends, twisting and turning using winch and engine power;

However, it was not only the SS that sap the energy of the teams, this year, the transport stages were equally thrilling and challenging for everyone in the convoy to move from one campsite to another; Even though the routes to the campsites were short (less than 15 kms), but the terrain was tough going in and even tougher getting out – it also had the “sting of the scorpion” effect at the respective exits of the campsites, where they had to fight “tooth and nail” through steep uphill, downhill, ruts, gullies and glutinous mud holes!
Getting in and out of the campsites of both the Predator and Terminator campsites were, indeed, a triumph of the human spirit in off-road 4x4;
The Longest Day
The 5 Dec exit from Terminator @ Talang earned this “Longest Day” title, where the main convoy took more than 12 hours to get out of the 3 km track; The mud pool turned into a mega mud monster of the extreme kind, and everyone had to use all the tricks in the book to get out of the” hell-hole!”
Twilight Zone I & II
If after going through the thrills and spills of 21 SS and escaping through “hell holes” were still not enough, the year’s special for the competitor teams had to go through not one but two Twilight Zones (TZ)!
Both TZ were tackled one day after the other on 5 and 6 Dec with TZ1 the lighter version (less than 4 hours) while TZ2 took the teams took 9 hours to complete the loop from campsite III at Kenaboi (at Jelebu district); Mother Nature was kind this time around, no heavy downpour during the assault on both the TZs; However even without the rain, it was still a punishing challenge befitting the TZ reputation;
Finale SS
After the jubilation of having conquered the TZ, the finale test of driving / recovery skills took place at campsite III with SS 22 and 23 through the river that snaked around the camp grounds; It was a thrilling wet, wet, wet finish!
Throughout the 23 SS, it has been a tight race to the finishing line, especially for the top 2 teams as well as among the top ten finishers; The finale SS became the deciders for the top placings; For all 25 teams that finished the event out of the 35 at the start, it was an achievement to be proud of;
Sting of the Scorpion
In summary, RFC 2014 ended like a Sting of the Scorpion: the route was shorter but has a stingy effect on man and machines like no other – pushing everyone to their limits and beyond, the SS were more technical requiring lots of strategic thinking, driving and recovery, and camaraderie was as thick as the jungle humidity - all of which made up this year’s edition one of the best ever organized in the 18-year history of the RFC!

SUZUKIS LEADING THE RUSSIAN CONTINGENT THIS YEAR.
Off Road X-Track Team from Vladivostok (Russian Far East) are no newcomers to RFC, having first joined in 2008 they have been back ever since albeit with different machines. They are “combat proven” in previous editions in Terengganu & Johor, having experienced 34 hrs of non-stop rain, mud, swollen river, slippery uphill/downhill & a host of unforgiving terrain churned out by the monsoon & most of all, in the Twilight Zone (TZ) in both states. “Last yr in Terengganu TZ of hulu Kemaman, another un4getable adventure of slipping/sliding, u can see all that in our DVD (footages by Oleg Kabalik),” said Andrey Kurdakov (President).
Hailing from such an extreme region themselves, with Siberia at their doorsteps, they fit the image of toughest of the tough braving through bogs, swamps, forests of their untamed region. This year, instead of their heavy machines (Toyotas/Nissans) leading their contingent, they have swapped the light weight Suzuki Jimnys for the competition while the rest will be touring category. “Two Suzukis will be our battle machines, “ said Valery Lyubarenko of Team 103 (with 2 RFC exp under his belt – 2010 & 2011), “the 2nd Suzuki will be from a first timer -Roman Kulbak,” added Valery. Even though their command of English is limited, the Russians hv no problem whatsoever with the rest when it comes to action in 4×4 come rain or shine. “We can get wet & damp all day/night here but still won’t get frozen stiff, so many natural obstacles within a short distance & not 4getting moving only 2 kms or less in 4 hrs..” they concluded.
