A kdo ve kaj več o tej dirki???
History
1983. The Footbal World Cup took place in Spain; no other events seem to be remembered. But it was then that the Fuoristrada Club 4x4 Pordenone was born: a group of offroads fans from Pordenone and province decides to create an association in order to organize some events and try to let grown the number of people fond of such a sport which hardly can gain a hold.
1990. After a first step through meetings and short non agonistic races, some Endurance races are finally organized until when, in 1990, the 1° Raid of Friuli 4x4 took place; it’s the beginning of a dream, which slowly start growing in each member’s heart, that’s to say the wish to bring in Italy one special of theWorld Cup Rallies Tout Terrain.
1993. From the first to the third edition, the Raid of Friuli was transformed little by little into the Italian Baja and in 1993 the “test FIA” decided who was worthy to obtain the candidature for becoming a World Cup race. Edi Orioli, already used to the Dakar races, put his signature to the event together with Maurizio Dominella and wins the race, which is going to become great.
1994. The World Cup adventure begins, the race takes place under a Summer fairy sun. The Citroen official team arrives in Pordenone, as well as the ingenious Jean Louis Schlesser with his stratospheric buggy and many other estimated international drivers. There is no big fight for the first place, as Pierre Lartigue together with Michel Perin defeat all enemies thanks to an enormous gap ahead all of them.
1997. Three news for the Italian Baja: the date has been changed, the race takes now place in February as opening race of the World Cup; the race is longer and has been divided in two specials; the prologue longs the beach of Lignano Sabbiadoro. The Citroen rallies’ ace Ari Vatanen starts at once very fast, but after less than 25 km overturns on the bed of the Cellina torrent, allowing Lartigue to win for the fourth consecutive time with his fantastic Zx Rally Raid.
1998. At the sixth edition bikes take place for the first time to the race, increasing the show, while the prologue has to move to the beach of Bibione. First time also for the absence of Citroen, which decided to retire from competitions at the end of 1997. Jean Louis Schlesser avails himself of the occasion and reaches the highest place of the podium in Pordenone. Among bikers the leader is the giant Fabio Farioli.
1999. The Italian Baja is by now a consolidated appointment of the World Cup Rallies Tout Terrain and deserves to come on the scene in a special way: the Rai sends here its troupes with cameras and reporters, making possible the first simultaneous TV transmission of the event. The winner is the Japanese Samurai Kenjiro Shinozuka, while the fist biker is the Spanish Juan Roma.
2000. Another change: the prologue takes place at the Osservatorio Ariete, then after two specials the end is on the beach of Bibione. The last millennium’s edition allows also trucks to take part to the race, beside cars and bikes. It deals only of three of them, but they assure a big show. The greatest winner are the Russian Kamaz both of Vladimir Tchaguine and of Firdaous Kabirov, with an enormous gap ahead of the Iveco of Miki Biasion. The car driver Franco Germanetti is the first italian winner of a World Cup.
2001. After gaining the Dakar’s first place, the German Jutta Kleinschmidt (a woman!) is able to win also the Italian Baja. The last World Cup winner, Schlesser, has to quit the race with his Buggy, because of the heavy rain. The three fastest bikers are Fabio Faroli with KTM, with a gap of 13’ ahead of Massimo Chiesa and over 14’ ahead of Antonio Colombo. First time for quads taking part to the race, with the first extraordinary winner, the local giant Angelo Montico..
2003. Mega hospitality at the Osservatorio Ariete, where tents, campers and motor-homes are welcome and can park and stay during the three days of the race. After sunset, when the daily specials are over, lights discover the true friendly atmosphere of the area. Then victory in gained by another Samurai, the Japanese Hiroshi Masuoka. 2004. The race can’t start, because of the cancellation of the track’s permissions already granted. Big disappointment for the Fuoristrada Club 4x4, which anyway without loosing heart try it again.
2005. The first and only one Italian Baja Sardinia takes place on the Sulcis tracks in Carbonia. The winner are the Portoguese Rui Sousa among cars, the Hungarian Akos Varga among bikes, the Italian Giorgio Arduini among quads.
2006. The Italian Baja come back to Friuli, with a track which longs the bed of the Tagliamento river and the stony grounds near Aviano; the Head Quarter is allocated at the Dream Village in Cordenons. For the first time cars are equipped with the “tracking”, whith is a modern satellite system. The spanish Marc Roura Blazquez leads and wins the race with a fast Nissan Pick-up.
2009. A lot of nostalgia in coming back to the Fiera Pavilions in Pordenone, where all organization’s offices can easily find place. Boris Gadasin, Zar from Pietroburgo, won for the second time the race and becomes well-liked by everybody in Pordenone.
2010. It’s nowadays’ history. Lorenzo Codecà, who was the favourite italian driver, has to quit the race at the prologue (as in 2009); the favourite foreign driver Gadasin, must stop during the first SS. The other drivers now can fight to win and it’s Krzystof Holowczyc from Poland who deserves the podium, as well as the italian leader Giovanni Manfrinato, from Padua. Terrific accident for the biker Nicola Dutto, from Cuneo, falling down at the beginning of the track.. It represents the only sad moment of the whole Italian Baja, which thanks to its organization’s abilities, becomes part of the Fia World Cup Cross Country. _________________ Suzuki Samurai is truly one of the most remarkable little vehicles around.
