Še samurai kot serra

The history of Suzuki Sierra is also the history of Suzuki Samurai, Suzuki Santana and Suzuki Caribbean. All these names define the broader Suzuki SJ series brand whose models were given different names for purposes of export market. The first SJ series vehicles were produced in 1982 in the Japanese city of Hamamatsu. In the beginning, the model was sold under the name Suzuki Jimny. The model had a 3-cylinder, 550cc engine which was directed at the domestic user. Later on, the manufacturer ventured into the export market and therefore, name such as Suzuki Sierra were born.

One of the earlier variance within this brand was SJ 410. It was conceived as an update of the LJ80 version. It had a 4-cylinder engine with a 1000cc capacity. The engine could produce 45bhp and could attain a 68mph speed. This is equivalent to 109km/h. Transmission was through a manual four-speed gearbox of the standard variety. It had drum brakes both at the front and rear wheels. This SJ 410 came with different faces including that of a convertible with a half-door, no-glass hardtop, 2-door hardtop, pickup truck and a truck with a raised roof. Santana Motors in Spain were responsible for producing this model for the European market. It was preferred as a domestic car due to 60% adherence to native parts.

Another variety manufactured within the Suzuki sierra brand was SJ413 which entered into the market in 1984. This model had a larger engine with a 1300cc capacity and power brakes all round. Transmission was through a manual 5-speed gearbox. The body and interior both came with a new design. The dashboard looked different as did the grille and passenger seats. These specifications were maintained in the production cycle of 1985. After 1985, the Suzuki sierra found its way into the US market.

The SJ series faired very well within its first year in the US market as well as in Canada. A total of 47000 SJ's were sold in the US alone during the first year of introduction. The engine of this Suzuki was 1.3liter, 4-cylinder engine that was capable of 63bhp. In the first year, this model was available in the hardtop and convertible design.

The suspension settings in this model were easier to use. In order to minimize body roll, the vehicle came with an anti-sway bar. The dashboard was more attractive than in the previous model. Low sales forced the manufacturer to withdraw this model from the US market. The main cause for this drop in sales was identified as the report released on 1988 on rollover by Consumer Reports.

After vacating the US market, the model continued to be sold elsewhere under the name Coily. It was given a facelift through a 1996 upgrade where it acquired coil-spring suspensions although it still retained the live axles that had been contested in the US. Then, the entire truck got a new face, with the seats being completely changed as well as the doors, steering wheel and dashboard. The changes gave it a very macho exterior physique.

After Consumer Reports released a damning report about the Suzuki being an unsafe car, the auto maker filed a suit, seeking compensation for damages resulting from a damaged reputation. Consumer Reports said in a 1988 report that the Suzuki Samurai was very prone to roll-over after the company carried out tests on avoidance maneuver on a short course. The report said that when the Suzuki was undertaking a severe turn in order to avoid a vehicle which suddenly blocks the road ahead during the test, it seemed to experience roll-over levels that were not acceptable.

The test was not meant to apply in normal driving conditions that range between 0 and 69 mph. However, buyers construed this to mean that the Suzuki Sierra was a generally unsafe car which posed a risk to human life. The $60 million suit filed in 1996 was finally settled out of the court through mutual consent after almost 8 years of battling it out on the corridors of justice. The mutual consent required CR to mention in an agreement that it had no intention whatsoever of implying that Suzuki Samurai easily rolls when it is being driven under routine conditions. The company had to mention that it was not its intention to create reservations about any other model that was manufactured by Suzuki.

The Suzuki Sierra has gone through many changes, making it heir to many latter-day models of the Japanese auto company. It started off as a very basic four-wheel drive car which in 1998 was replaced by Jimny 4WD. Some re-badging here and there resulted in the model being re-marketed as Holden Drover. Today, the car dominates the second hand market due to the durability of its indigenous parts. It is a widely traveled car, having cut out a niche in Continental Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.

In Australia, this model was a perfect match to the harsh climatic conditions that exist in different parts of the continent. Some notable changes that you may have noticed in this model have been done in Australia. It is also here that the petrol transplant is very popular. The case is different when it comes to its diesel counterpart. Many people remember this model with a lot of nostalgia. Its ability to scale heights was unrivalled.

This is a generally small car whose length is only 135 inches. Its width is 60.6 inches while its height is 65.6 inches. The wheelbase is 79.9inches. The ground clearance of 8.1in is rather satisfactory for such a small car. This clearance gives this model a lot of stability it requires especially when swerving through bends at high speed. This Suzuki’s curb weight is 2,125lbs and it has a gross weight of 2932 lbs.

The dimensions of the interior are designed in a four-seater style. The cargo space is around 32 cubic feet. With this in mind, one can evaluate the appropriateness of the model to their daily commuting or business needs. Many people have come to appreciate this model as an efficient SUV despite claims to the contrary especially in the US where it had to pull out on account of a damaged reputation. People who are conscious of security can always get round this problem by changing from a soft-top and choosing to buy a hard-top model. Some people say that a soft-top model can easily be accessed by thieves.

The engine of this model has 4 cylinders and a capacity of 1.3 liters. Of course there are variances in cases where the model has heirs or successors. Ordinarily, the base engine type is inline 4. The maximum horsepower that it can attain is 6000rpm, with the highest torque lever being 76ft. This performance enables it to qualify for the 4WD category. When transplants are done, the transformation is amazing; you will find it hard to believe that the changes have been done on the Suzuki Sierra that you are used to. The vehicles turning circle is 33.4 feet and has a fuel capacity of 10.6 gallons.

A rather new modification which is on sale in New Zealand goes by the name Jimny Sierra. It is a replacement of the JLX model. The resulting product comes with standard specifications of a higher level as well as improved security. The model has aluminum alloy wheels whose diameter is 15 inches. The anti-lock brakes offer the driver more security than in any other previous model. Buyers initially used to consider performance only but lately, market trends indicate the looks have started to appeal to them too. They claim that the looks make the impressive off-road performance even livelier.

The body of this Suzuki model is made with emphasis being put on practicality alone. The chassis is of the full-frame variety while the low-gear ratios make the model appeal to users who are looking out for different needs. The transmission is made in such a way that the driver will love the feel of every change in gear. The positioning of the gearbox is even more appealing since it is strategically positioned. The maximum approach angle that this machine can handle is 42 degrees. That is not too bad for an engine that is capable of 110Nm torque.

The variable valve technology employed in making the engine is responsible for this high energy threshold. There are four valves in each cylinder and fuel injection is through a multi-valve system. This Suzuki Sierra spreads its versatility tentacles to the comfort zone where you find air conditioning, an electric-driven window control system, power steering with a corruptible steering column, as well as all the standard equipment that you need for auto safety. This Suzuki Sierra nameplate has a good booster for several years in different export markets, New Zealand being one of these successful ventures.

gipsy 2013

Maruti Suzuki is all set to revive the Gypsy, a source informs us. The company is looking at improving the Maruti Gypsy at its key area – the powertrain. The recent decline of domestic market share to 40% has really caused India’s largest car maker to enter new segment. Furthermore the shift from small cars to SUVs has led to the company looking at the MPV and SUV segment to get volumes. The XA Alpha Concept which was showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo could very well be the face of the next Gypsy. Maruti Suzuki will certainly not use the XA Alpha name for a production vehicle.

So what could the new Maruti Suzuki Gypsy get? The engines from the Swift and SX4 will debut in the Gypsy and will give the compact SUV a fresh lease of life. Remember the Gypsys are known as mountain goats, due to their light weight offering them go anywhere ability. The new Gypsy is said to maintain this advantage and will use aluminum components for weight reduction. A plastic fuel tank (like the one found on the new Swift) will also be used to save on weight.

The 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine uses VVT and produces 86 BHP of peak power at 6000 RPM and 114 Nm of peak torque at 4000 RPM. The 1.3-litre diesel DDiS motor on the other hand produces 89 BHP of peak power at 4000 RPM and 200 Nm of peak torque at 1750 RPM. Maruti understands that a compact SUV which just 2-doors and a petrol engine won’t work and is striving to launch a compact SUV which has all the right ingredients for success. Both the petrol and diesel engines are extremely frugal and should be priced below Rs. 8 lakhs. A launch is expected in 2013 and the next generation Gypsy will rival the Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster.

THE STORY OF SJ80 (Coily)

The Coily SJ Series Jimny was not only sold in Japan, but also in the global market, including Australia, South Africa, Latin America, some parts of South East Asia, and some parts of Europe.

Meanwhile, in other countries, such as India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Indonesia, production and sales of the leaf sprung SJ Series Jimny continued without being replaced by the Coily.

For most export markets, the Coily SJ were codenamed SJ413, and was very similar to the JDM JB32 Jimny Sierra. It featured wider front and rear tracks, and wide over fenders on the sides of the car.

In Australia and New Zealand, the Coily Sierra and Samurai were codenamed SJ80, differentiating them from the leaf sprung SJ413.

The export versions also got the G13B engine. The carburetor fuel supply system was used for most export versions of the Coily SJs, including the ones for Australia. Other markets, such as South America and Europe, got the fuel injected version of the G13B.

Engine Specifications
Engine: four-stroke, four-cylinder, 1298cc G13BA SOHC
Max. power: 64HP@6000rpm
Max.torque: 10.2kgm@3500rpm
Fuel distribution: carburetor

Central and South Americas

The Coily SJs was also available in a number of Central and South American countries.

In some Latin American countries, such as Chile, the Coily was sold as the Suzuki Samurai II. In other Central and South American countries, such as Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, it was sold as the Samurai, without the “II” prefix.

The Coily wasn't available in countries like Colombia and Venezuela, where Suzuki products were sold under the Chevrolet brand. In those countries, Chevrolet continued selling the leaf sprung versions of the Samurai.

South American versions of the Coily Samurai were fitted with the fuel injected version of the G13B engine, and was available in softtop and hardtop variants. The models were sold between 1996 and 1998.

In 2003, when Suzuki pulled out of the Brazilian market, parts for the Coily became scarce as Suzuki dealers and service centres closed. As a result, owners had to individually import the parts, and alternative part distribution networks formed around Suzuki 4x4 communities.

When Suzuki returned to the Brazilian market in 2008, spare parts became officially available once more, although at relatively high pricing. Many of the Brazilian Coily owners then turned to the alternative networks to get parts for their Coilies.

Africa

The Coily also made it to the African continent. It was quite popular in countries like Peru and South Africa.

In South Africa, the Coily was available only as grey import vehicles, as Suzuki only sold the leaf sprung SJs in the country. The SJ80 model with carburetor were the ones imported to South Africa. High roof versions were also available.

Europe

The Coily was only sold in certain parts of Europe. It was marketed in Eastern European countries like Ukraine, Romania, Czech Republic, Turkey, and Russia. However, it was not marketed in most Western European. Finland was probably the only Western European country where the Coily was sold. The Coily Samurai was also available in the island countries of Southern Europe, Malta and Cyprus.

The Coily SJs were sold only in a relatively short period of time. Suzuki began making the model in late 1995, and in 1998, it was already replaced by the third generation Jimny.

In 1998, Santana Motors began producing diesel engined Samurais, called the Samurai Td, in Spain. These models had exterior and interior appearance similar to that of the Coily SJs, and were sold alongside the third generation Jimny. However, the Samurai Td adopted the leaf spring suspensions for both its front and rear wheels, meaning that they are not considered as Coily SJs.

Australia

In Australia, the model is sold as the Suzuki Sierra, and was codenamed SJ80. The Coily Sierra was sold from early 1996 up until late 1998. It was then replaced by the third generation Jimny in 1999.

1996

The Coily Sierra arrived in Australia in early 1996, and was available in only one trim level, the JX, with two body style options: convertible (softtop) and hardtop.

For a period of time, the old leaf sprung version of the Sierra continued to be sold alongside the Coily model before eventually being discontinued. The old version was then renamed the Sierra Classic to differentiate it from the new Coily. A pick up version called the Sierra Stockman was also available.

1997

In 1997, Suzuki introduced two new variants for the Coily Sierra, the Sierra Surf, and the Sierra Trax. Both models were based on the standard JX model but were given an additional set of equipment. The trim levels and general equipment list are as follows:

Sierra JX - standard
2 speaker stereo
intermittent wipers
radio cassete
tachometer
trim-velour(hardtop)

Sierra Surf – softtop only
Chrome wheels
Body colour bumpers
Nudge bar - front

Sierra Trax – softtop and hardtop
Alloy wheels
Front fog lamps
Nudge bar-front

1998

In 1998, Suzuki eliminated the Trax trim level, and introduced a new one, the Limited Edition JX.

Sierra JX – softtop and hardtop
2 speaker stereo
intermittent wipers
radio cassete
tachometer
trim-velour (hardtop)

Sierra Limited Edition JX – softtop and hardtop
Body color bumpers
Chrome wheels

Sierra Surf JX – softtop only
Body color bumpers
Chrome wheels
Nudge bar-front
