Moab Offroad interview w Tim Hardy at the 2010 Ultimate Adventure
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hqlKQWuLco

Tim Hardy:

In 1995, Tim Hardy wowed judges and competitors alike with his '87 Samurai and matching trailer during the Top Truck Challenge. Tim's Samurai made events like the Tank Trap and Mud Pit look easy, even with a stock motor and a strange amalgam of Sidekick, Ford, and Subaru (!) drivetrain parts.

As far as Samurai builders go, it's tough to top Tim. Although the motor remains stock, Tim built his own 4.6:1 Rock Lobster transfer case and unique 3:1 underdrive that combined with the 5.12:1 axle gears to give him 90:1 gearing. Now, to the naked eye, the axles on Tim's ride seem like stock Suzi parts. However, in an effort to create the ultimate in durability, Tim used everything from Mustang 5.0 axleshafts and Subaru Birfields to (and we're not making this up) his own cable locker for both diffs to build his axles. At the Engineering judging, the TTC judges marveled at Tim's front-wheel center caps that locked his hubs with one twist. They're also waterproof. To get an idea of how meticulous Tim is with his buildups, consider that his front-axle skidplate is 53 pieces of aluminum welded together and polished on both sides. A spring-over using a combination of Samurai springs and Nitro Cell shocks provide elevation for the 35-inch Yoko Mud Diggers. Just in case you're wondering, Tim towed that trailer (equipped with hydraulic disc brakes) through every event at TTC that year and ended up coming in Second Place overall.

Tim as been a staple of TTC ever since and was Head Judge for 2005.

Tim also participated in the 2006 4Wheel and Off-Road Magazine Ultimate Adventure.

Tim Hardy: 1987 Suzuki Samurai

Driver: Tim Hardy
Stomping Grounds: The Wild West
Tim Hardy is a virtual walking, talking Swiss Army Knife. He can make stuff that doesn’t exist, repair the irreparable, and even manage to pull a trailer through trails that the average rig can barely drive through. Tim has been on almost all Ultimate Adventures, each time piloting one of his seemingly low-budget yet indestructible Suzukis. And while the UA F-150 was the first official IFS rig to lead the pack, it hasn’t been the only IFS rig on the UA. Tim piloted an IFS Sidekick on UA 2007.

Drivetrain

Engine: Stock
Transmission: 5-speed
Transfer Case: Stock with a custom low-range gearset
Axles: EZ Locker, 5.12 gears

Suspension

Springs & Such: Spring-over with Rancho shocks
Tires & Wheels: 35-inch BFG M-Ts custom grooved on 15-inch aluminum wheels

Other

Custom Samurai trailer on 35s that hauls enough spare parts to build an additional Samurai

Tim Hardy is a rare breed of die-hard four-wheeler and a permanent fixture on Ultimate Adventure. He is a MacGyver kind of guy who can fix virtually anything with limited tools and resources. Handy and mechanically inclined, he's the perfect man to have on the trail! This year Tim drove his Suzuki almost 3,000 miles to join us, experiencing catastrophic engine failure along the way, but with his quick thinking and ingenuity he was able to join us two days later and finish UA with the rest of the crew.

Tim Hardy: Samurai super star, off-road legend.

We were introduced to Tim Hardy back in 1996, which marked our first trip out to Moab. Back then, being hardcore Samurai guys ourselves, Tim was a bit of an idol for us. Fast forward 16 years, and he’s still one of our idols. His famous red Samurai is virtually unchanged from years past, sporting 35″ tires and a slew of homebrew Hardy inventions like upgraded front axles & birfield drive shafts. While he’s sporting a “few” dents collected over the past 16+ years, there’s still one straight piece of metal on the top vent where the hood meets the firewall. Tim seems pretty determined to change that, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Tim’s been with Ultimate Adventure for 11 seasons now. Safe to say he’s a regular with this group.

Hardy 'Zu
Without a doubt the most abused (at least in the looks department) rig on the UA was driven by none other than the legendary Tim Hardy. With enough field fix know-how to make MacGyver look like an amateur, Tim is one of the greatest additions to the legends of UA team and each year he manages to pilot one of his Suzuki-powered rigs up and over obstacles that challenge even the most high-zoot buggies.
