The 2013 Balkan battle heats up.

Weekends at the Croatia trophy are spectator days where all the action tales place in front of crowds of onlookers rather than in the depths of the forests. Team work was the order of the day and the marshalls came up with a very innovative way of getting the crews to work together... teams of 5 cars were lined up together and had to rig up a rope bridge across a septic quarry pool using their winch ropes. The first group had teams from the UK, Holland, Hungary and France and we all looked on amazed as a couple of guys swam out with the cables which they then pulled taut over the roofs for the luckless guy wrapped up in tree strops to inch himself across...

On the other side of the abandoned quarry the organisers of the King of Portugal event laid out a course that twisted over piles of rocks and around a hill that required two cars to use winches to the third's roof to help it around a very steep drop. There was lots of shouting, lots of cursing and a few mishaps from bad communication but in the end everyone got around... Sunday was a slightly different story though... Trophy Day brought teams together but the Circuit race turned former friends into bitter enemies as it was every crew for themselves through the soaking woods. Winch ropes were tangled around axles or snapped under knobbly tyres, one co-driver bravely sacrificed himself by throwing himself over the bonnet of a competitor's Land Rover to stop him driving over his winch rope and winch bumpers were used as battering rams to find a way through... Groups of 10 cars were set off at the same time and after the 2nd lap the leaders also had to contend with the slower back markers. It was pure, muddy chaos... and was brilliant! The 2 Hungarian teams were the class of the field, Szilard Magyar in his G-Wagon and Csaba Boros in his Jeep Proto leading Jim Marsden in his Land Rover... and at the end of the day it was these three ahead of 4th places Antione Reul by nearly 2 hours.
With our customary difficulties in communicating Boros put two thumbs up and smiled which I guess means that he is happy with how everything is going and the performance of his car, but he was just about the only one with a smile. Top local, Boris Kus broke his PTO winch on the first stage and had to go through most of it using his slow electric one and then lost another 30 minutes on the night stage trying to find a waypoint. Roman Kulbak was another to loose time going around in circles in the darkness and his navigation woes cost over an hour. Jaap Betema in his monstrous D&G Buggy smashed a brake calliper and had to stop to fix it and is now 2 hours behind the leaders, and one of my favourite cars, the Yamaha R1 powered buggy had a electric system failure and have gone back to Austria. Another top Croatian, Gordon Krota, usually at the wheel of a Jeep, destroyed his friend's Land Rover and is now just a spectator. “We broke the Ashcroft driveshaft before even 60 seconds on the prologue and then the chassis. We tried to fix it, went for a test and then the engine fell out... really Land Rovers are just for going in the field to collect potatoes,” he shrugged.

Doing a little bit better are the Maltese teams. Stephan Mallia and Alistair Caruana had a few punctures and an electrical problem and are back in 15th, but hoping to get back into the Top 10, while in 7th are their friends Adrian Bezzina and John Zammit. One of the most relaxed and friendly teams in the event are the Norwegians Reidar Sveen and Cristian Huseby in their Land Rover. Huddles up in the corner of their tent that wasn't leaking they were lamenting the bad weather but are still enjoying the stages. “The long stages are great,” Sveen smiled. “Big fun! And we've had no problems... yet.” They are in 11th.

The thunder is still rumbling and the rain is heavy so Igor is joking that the catering tent will be open all night for those being stuck in the forest all day. Big water crossings, over-flowing bogs and mud, mud, mud is the order of the day...
