The Suzuki Jimny wins best 4x4 at the UK Car Of The Year Awards

https://www.lesliesmotors.co.uk/suzuki/news/suzuki-jimny/

“It’s so rare to find a car that provokes such enthusiasm from such a wide variety of people. It gets people animated and talking about cars, which too few new models can manage.”
Paul Barker – Company Car Today

"It’s impossible not to smile when considering the new Suzuki Jimny. Offering shrunken, but proper, 4x4 skills wrapped in a fun and perfectly judged shape, it nods to Suzuki’s heritage but interprets it in a truly fresh way.”
Guy Bird – Freelance

"If we are talking about building a 4x4 that is fit for purpose Suzuki has aced it; the latest Jimny not only looks fantastic but it’s also a genuinely great off-roader, not to mention extremely affordable to buy and run.”
Chris Knapman – Car Gurus

“Once in a while a car appears that people are drawn to irrespective of price or brand. The honesty, purity of design and robustness of the Jimny makes it deserving of an award.”
Jonny Smith – TV Presenter.

Mercedes-AMG G63 and Suzuki Jimny: TG mag's Apocalypse Survival Tools of the Year
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnLTqPeUtNA

When the Jimny grows up, it wants to be just like the G-Class

When the apocalypse comes and rains fire on these unholy lands, only five things are scientifically capable of survival. The first four are common knowledge: cockroaches, tinned Spam, MotoGP riders and that dried Weetabix residue when you leave your bowl out overnight. The other is the new Mercedes-AMG G63 – an impenetrable fortress of a car, just as capable of outrunning a nuclear blast as it is sitting tight, absorbing the impact then continuing its business, trundling nonchalantly across the debris.

The Suzuki Jimny, judging by its three-star NCAP slap on the wrist, wouldn’t fare quite so well in the initial fireball, which is a shame because it would flourish in the aftermath. It might give away 476bhp to the G63, but the Jimny is a tiny, wilful, mountain goat of a car that can scamper over most things that stand in its path. In so many ways, not just its adorably squared-off body, it’s the apprentice to the G, the young whippersnapper who wants to be just like the big Merc when it grows up. And who are we to get in the way of its dreams?

Suzuki working on larger, five-door Jimny

New Delhi, India - The Suzuki Jimny stands out as a champion among modern SUVs.

While every other compact high-rider has essentially become a hatchback on stilts, Suzuki’s little Jimny is still a traditional 4x4 of the old fashioned kind, equipped with the off-roading hardware to tackle just about any trail thrown at it.

And while it’s small size also works in its favour in tricky terrain, it does limit the vehicle’s overall market appeal to those that don’t require a practical vehicle.

So why not create a larger, five-door version of the Jimny then?

It seems that’s exactly what the Maruti Suzuki division in India is up to, according to Cardekho.com. Citing inside sources, the Indian publication reports that the new model will be launched in India in 2021. It will still measure less than four metres in length, although with the current three-door coming in at 3625mm, there is still plenty of room to stretch.

At this stage there is no word on whether this ‘Jimny XL’ will be offered outside of India, although given that many of South Africa’s Suzukis originate from the Maruti division, it’s certainly not a long shot for our market, if you’ll excuse the unintended pun.

According to the aforementioned source, the five-door Jimny is likely to be called the Gypsy.

Power will almost certainly come from the same 1.5-litre normally aspirated petrol engine found in the three-door, which in that guise pushes out 75kW and 130Nm.

It has however been speculated that in order to keep costs down Maruti Suzuki might offer a rear-wheel-drive variant, in addition to the 4x4 configuration that’s standard in overseas markets.

Sure, a 2WD, five-door Jimny does attack tradition somewhat, but if Suzuki can broaden its appeal then surely that makes it far more likely that the Jimny will survive for years to come, and eventually get a successor. And that, ultimately, is what's going to matter most to fans.

Suzuki Jimny Commercial Announced

Suzuki UK has introduced a version of its Jimny that will focus on light-commercial applications. Check it out.

The Suzuki Jimny is a charming yet capable compact SUV. One of its biggest faults is its tiny boot - there's precious little space back there.

Suzuki UK has introduced a version of the Jimny that will address this major shortcoming and it's being marketed as a commercial vehicle. The removal of the second row of seats has opened up considerable space and we suspect the loss of the rear bench is massively offset by the gains in practicality. Suzuki claims this version of the Jimny has a luggage capacity of 863 litres. The Japanese brand says that's 33 litres more than the 4-door version with its rear seats folded.

Suzuki is offering the newcomer with a flat floor as well as a safety cargo partition, so your belongings don't come flying into the front cabin under heavy braking.

Under the bonnet is the same 1.5-litre petrol engine with 75 kW and 130 Nm. In this commercial application, the Suzuki Jimny is offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Has it lost any of its appeal or capability? Not at all, as Suzuki says its 2-seater commercial Jimny retains its ladder frame setup, 3-link axle suspension and its AllGrip Pro 4-wheel drive system with low range.

As an interesting proposition this is, we're more interested in a bakkie version of the Suzuki Jimny. There are already companies doing conversions, with one, aptly named Suzuki Jimny PickUp, offering suspension lifts as well as dedicated offroad tyres. Despite its small size and small engine, the Suzuki Jimny will continue to endear itself to many, us included.

Suzuki Jimny 5-door coming in 2021

Maruti Suzuki will soon begin producing the Jimny in India (up until now, the popular pint-sized 4x4 has been produced exclusively in Japan) and a new report suggests the highly-anticipated 5-door version could see the light as early as next year, if not soon thereafter...

Because of the limited capacity of Suzuki’s Kosia plant in Japan’s Shizuoka prefecture, demand for the Jimny has always exceeded supply, but that has done nothing to curb prospective buyers' enthusiasm... Such is the "cult of Jimny" that low volume/specialist versions of the plucky off-roader, such as a pick-up in New Zealand and an LCV in the UK have come to market in 2020!

Earlier this year, Autocar India quoted to an “official privy to information of the project” as saying production of the 3-door Jimny (from completely knocked-down kits imported from Japan) would begin at Maruti Suzuki’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat during 2020 and that, 6 months thereafter, the plant would begin building 5-door Jimnys with the units designated for the Indian and export markets.

According to a recent report by GaadiWaadi.com, the 5-door version of the India-specific Maruti Suzuki Jimny is expected to be launched in India at some point during next year "with high local content" as a rival to the new-generation Mahindra Thar, which itself is a far more practical, compact-SUV-like proposition than the current (outgoing) model.

This development suggests that, at the very least, the supply of Jimnys to Suzuki South Africa, which already sources most of the models that it sells on the local market from India, may improve in the near future. But what about the bigger picture? Well, the 5-door version of the Jimny, which is expected to be mechanically similar to the 3-door, but with a longer wheelbase (ostensibly based on an adapted version of the current model’s ladder-frame chassis) could ostensibly be introduced in Mzansi too. Given the intensity of the current compact family car/small crossover craze, the target market for a tiny SUV with genuine off-road ability might seem small (within the context of the overall new-vehicle market), but then again, an extra pair of doors would certainly broaden the Suzuki's appeal.

We imagine that a 5-door Jimny, with a modicum of rear legroom and greater practicality (hopefully with a slightly bigger load bay, if that's at all possible, please Suzuki) could find its niche with genuine off-road enthusiasts who'd like to cart the kids to school during the week... and take them along on their weekend bundu-bashing adventures.

What could it look like? Well, the best renders that we found during our internet trawl (shown here) were created by Nikita Chuyko for Russian publication Auto Mail.

Although it’s unlikely that the upcoming 5-door Jimny will be quite as dextrous as its 3-door sibling off the beaten track – it will have to have a longer wheelbase to accommodate an extra pair of doors – the newcomer will share its sibling’s proven off-road underpinnings (such as low-range transfer case and live axles) as well as safety systems. We believe it will also be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol motor mated with a 5-speed ‘box or 4-speed automatic.

Working with Toyota on another model

Another interesting tidbit in the GaadiWaadi.com report is that Maruti Suzuki further plans to expand its line-up of small crossovers (which includes the Vitara Brezza) with a new model developed in conjunction with Toyota and based on the latter company's Raize, which sits in a class below the C-HR. The Raize measures 3 995 mm in length, 1 695 mm in width and 1 620 mm in height.

Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-Door Launch By July 2022 – Report

We reported earlier that Maruti Suzuki won’t be introducing the 3-door Jimny in the country. Instead, the brand is readying a 5-door version of the mini off-roader. A new Team-BHP report claims that Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch the locally developed Jimny 5-door in the country by July 2022.
Jimny 5-Door Codenamed YMD

Codenamed YWD, the new 5-door version of the Jimny will be developed for the Indian markets. The report further claims that drawings of the new model have already been finalized. In fact, requests for quotations (RFQs) will be submitted to domestic suppliers within January 2021.

The India-spec Maruti Jimny 5-door will be powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine that also powers the Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross. This engine is capable of producing 103bhp of power and 138Nm of torque. A four-wheel-drive system is expected to come as standard. Both manual and automatic gearbox options are likely to be on offer.
3-Door Jimny Cancelled

Maruti Suzuki is currently producing 1,200-1,500 units of the 3-door Jimny SUV per month for exports only. The company has no plans to introduce this mini off-roader with 3-doors in the country. It was speculated that MSIL could display this off-roader at NEXA dealerships to gauge customers response.

Could Be Called New Gypsy

It is expected that the 5-door version of the Jimny could be re-branded as the new-gen Maruti Suzuki Gypsy. The new model will be sold through NEXA premium dealership network, which current sells Ciaz, S-Cross, Baleno, Ignis and XL6.

The 5-door model will have a longer wheelbase and is expected to be based on the Jimny Sierra. The Sierra is 3,550mm long, 1,645mm wide and 1,730mm tall, and has a ground clearance of 210mm. It has a wheelbase of 2,250mm. The 5-door model is expected to measure around 3.9 meters in length, and the wheelbase is likely to be increased by 200-250mm to 2,500mm.
Maruti Suzuki’s SUV Onslaught

Maruti Suzuki is reportedly readying around 5 new utility vehicles for the Indian market. The company will introduce the next-gen Vitara Brezza, Baleno based compact crossover, a new mid-sized SUV and the new Jimny in India by 2023. Adding to it, the company is also working on the next-gen S-Cross.

The Suzuki Jimny Isn’t Sold in the US, and That’s a Crime

It’s hard to see how the Jimny wouldn’t be successful. Though, if Suzuki knew how to market cars to Americans, they would still be here.

Suzuki abandoned the American car market in 2012. Let’s be honest. You weren’t burning a candle for the Japanese automaker. We won’t quiz you on what models were on offer. The important point is this means there is just about zero chance the new Suzuki Jimny will make an appearance in the United States. That stinks. It’s an awesome car. It could have filled a niche in the American market.

Car folk love the Jimny, with good reason. In a car market that awards mediocrity at everything, the Jimny excels at something. It is a simple, tough, purpose-built off-roader with a true 4×4. It won’t offer the comfort of a Range Rover. But, the little guy will go everywhere a Range Rover can go and a few places where it can’t. It’s built to withstand a mud-splattered beating day-in and day-out for a decade or more.

Normal folk love the Jimny too. It’s cute. It’s boxy. The small off-roader is a proven commodity. About the chicest classic car one can own is a vintage (and probably artfully customized) Land Rover Defender or Toyota Land Cruiser. The Jimny is the closest modern production car in spirit, if not in appearance, to those classics.

There’s a hole in the market for the Jimny. The Jeep Wrangler has no competition. Jeep has ramped up the profit margins by making the Wrangler a de facto luxury car. Sure, you can buy one for under $30,000 if you forego a hard roof and avail yourself of the “air conditioning bypass” option. That cost of entry improves little with age. Wranglers have the highest resale value of any cars in the U.S. What if the Jimny was there to offer similar looks and similar off-road chops for a cut-rate price?

Yes, the Jimny has its flaws. It’s relatively loud. It’s bumpy. The steering is soft. It has no trunk space with the seats up. Even with a curb weight of just 2,400 lbs (less than a Fiat 500), 100hp and 96lb-ft of torque from the 1.5-liter engine are not much. The Jimny will feel somewhere between moderately and woefully underpowered on the highway. That sounds unbearable. That’s also almost the precise description of the base model YJ Wrangler I had in high school, the most fun daily driver I have owned. I say almost because the heat on the Jimny probably works.

So, we have a charming, plucky little off-roader that looks like a Defender, is a beast off the pavement, is as bullet-proof as a Subaru, earns plaudits from critics and commoners and comes in at a low price point. With the right marketing, it’s hard to see how that wouldn’t be successful. Though, if Suzuki knew how to market cars to Americans, they would still be here.

With tariffs and technological change afoot, the present seems about the worst time to re-enter the U.S. car market. American Jimny fans will be left to cruise Instagram and wait 25 years to import one or emigrate.

The Suzuki Jimny Is the Best Bad Car I’ve Ever Driven

Suzuki’s tiny off-roader isn’t available in the US.

Let’s get this out of the way: the Suzuki Jimny is an objectively bad car. Its acceleration is objectively bad. Its top speed is objectively bad. Its interior, ride quality, handling and brakes? Bad, bad, bad, bad. It takes about 14 seconds to get to 60 mph, tops out at 87 mph (if you can even get there), requires you to stomp on the brakes to come to a stop and will shake and rattle and squeak all along the way. This, however, is all irrelevant.

Saying that a bad car is good, not just in spite of but because of its faults, is a cliche that’s been around at least as long as car reviews have. I suspect this is a reaction to the rapidly-changing automotive landscape, where electronics and advances in engineering have made cars…far more than just cars. The desire for something counter to modern cars — something simple yet flawed
— is understandable, especially when it comes to off-roaders. Simple and flawed off-roaders from decades past fought wars, built societies and explored the world. The Suzuki Jimny has always been one of those cars. It still is.

It debuted in 1970 as the LJ10, a tiny soft-top three-seater (a spare wheel took the spot where a fourth seat should have gone) with a 359cc two-cylinder engine air-cooled engine. This, on paper, would not seem like a recipe for a world-class off-roader, but the Suzuki’s compact body and nimble chassis could take it places larger 4x4s couldn’t go. Within the next few years, Suzuki would produce hard-top and pickup versions with larger engines, making it a workhorse star in places like Australia, Africa, the Middle East and South America. Two more generations would eventually debut: the SJ in 1981 (sold in the US as the Samurai) and the JB in 1998

The Jimny currently is stuck in 1998. Save for mild changes the Suzuki Jimny that debuted 20 years ago is nearly identical to the Suzuki Jimny sold worldwide today. It’s still a bare-bones, body-on-frame box about 11 feet long. It has a 1.3-liter inline-four, five-speed manual and a part-time 4WD system that changes from 2WD to 4WD or 4WD-L with the push of a button — and an audible thunk that’s disconcerting the first time you hear it and satisfying from there on out.

The rental-spec Jimny I drove for a week while on vacation in Costa Rica had roll-up windows. It had patterned cloth seats that look like they belong back in 1998. It had a head unit that looked and functioned like it was pulled from an Autozone clearance bin. I’m sure higher-specification Jimnys feature slight improvements in all these areas if you’re willing to pay for them, but even so, this is, again, all irrelevant. A Jimny is not about convenience, comfort or playing music; it’s about going off-road without a fuss. Nearly three million Jimnys have been sold across the globe for this reason.

Imagine, if you will, a steep gravel incline before you; it’s pocked with large rocks and deep pits. You put the Jimny into 4WD-L, pop the shifter into first, rev the hell out of that pint-sized engine and begin to slowly crawl up the hill. You place the wheels at the crests between the road’s bumps — which you can do because the Jimny’s visibility is excellent — and ascend to the top, surefooted as a mountain goat. When you make it, you’re greeted by a lovely view of the Pacific ocean, a reward for your hard work.

About a year before traversing such a hill in the Jimny, I spent some time off-road in a $200,000 Range Rover Autobiography. (I’m reluctant to use the verb “driving” because the Autobiography pretty much did that all on its own.) I couldn’t help but think of this experience when driving the Jimny up that hill because I have no doubt the Autobiography could magically handle that road without any human input. And that fills me with existential dread. A car that can drive itself off-road only reminds me that I — a flawed meat sack of a human with hopes, dreams and fears — am woefully imperfect because a truck can drive itself better than I can. But you know what’s also imperfect? The Jimny.

The Jimny, like me, has to work to get up that hill. Nevermind that its ride-height and wheel articulation give it an advantage. It’s still a machine that requires patience, skill and hard work to wrangle into the difficult spaces you point it toward. It makes me feel far more alive than if I had done the same tricky route in a big, numb truck laden with cameras and radar. At the top of that hill is the point at which I embrace the Jimny’s imperfections. It is there when every moment behind the wheel, spent grinning like an idiot because I know it’s capable of more than the passersby think, culminates. It’s at this point that I begin to lament that this car is sold in almost every country in the world except for the United States.

Critics would likely say that the Jimny is too small, too basic, too slow and too cheap to meet the modern US car buyer’s expectations. This doesn’t seem fair — I know of plenty of small, basic, slow and cheap cars that are sold in the US. The Nissan Sentra comes to mind. Having driven a Sentra, I can confidently say that car does not redeem itself in the same way that the Jimny does, which makes its exclusion from our shores all the more unjust.

At the Geneva Auto Show this year, Suzuki is expected to roll out the fourth-generation Jimny. Spy shots indicate this will be the same little, boxy old-school off-roader it’s always been, but with a new neo-retro design. It looks delightful, frankly, but if you live in the US, your chances of driving one here are about the same as you getting struck by lightning twice on the same day you win the lottery. If you live just about anywhere else, consider yourself lucky — you can still buy one of the purest, simplest off-roaders ever made.
